Advanced Herbal Prescription Writing 8 Course Series
This is an 8 course series teaching the art of custom herbal writing. The first course will begin with an introduction to the course material and will highlight the primary skills required for advanced herbal prescription writing. The remaining 7 courses cover TCM herb categories discussing the most frequently used herbs for each.
This is being offered as a set of 8 courses that are each pending approval for 2 hours of distance learning credit by the NCCAOM and the California Acupuncture Board. Each course can also be purchased individually. Note: The first course is a prerequisite before any additional courses can be purchased.
After each course is broadcast, the distance learning option will be posted and available for purchase. The broadcast dates are listed below for reference. Access to course content will be available for up to 2 years.

Individual Course Descriptions
Course 1: Introduction to Course Information & Material
The art of custom herbal prescription writing comes from a synthesis of several skills. Essential in all aspects of clinical care is the ability to conduct a thorough, comprehensive patient interview. A sample case study will be presented outlining all of these essential steps and will include a custom herbal formula developed through the use of these newly learned skills.
- We will discuss the details specific to TCM that allows the physician to interview the patient in a comprehensive manner.
- We will review TCM diagnostic methods with an eye specifically toward herbal medicine treatment.
- The essential step in developing a thorough treatment plan is writing a detailed treatment principle. We will discuss this step in detail as it is the most frequently overlooked step between diagnosis and treatment.
- Finally, we will discuss the necessary ability to differentiate individual herbs within single herb categories based on best use of individual herbs.
Course 2: Release Exterior, Clear Heat, Eliminate Wind Dampness
In the second class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Clear Heat, Drain Downward, and Eliminate Wind Damp categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented.
Course 3: Aromatic Transform Damp, Transform Damp, Transform Phlegm
In the third class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Aromatic Transform Damp, Transform Damp, and Transform Phlegm categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented.
Course 4: Stop Cough & Wheezing, Regulate Qi, Regulate Blood
In the fourth class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Stop cough & Wheezing, Regulate Qi, and Regulate Blood categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented. A detailed case study will be presented at the end of this class to highlight course materials learned up to this point.
Course 5: Stop Bleeding, Warm Interior, Tonify Qi
In the fifth class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Stop Bleeding, Warm Interior, and Tonify Qi categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented.
Course 6: Tonify Blood, Tonify Yin, Tonify Yang
In the sixth class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Tonify Blood, Tonify Yin and Tonify Yang categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented.
Course 7: Astringents, Calm Spirit, Open Orifice
In the seventh class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Astringents, Calm Spirit, and Open Oriface categories. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. Brief case studies will also be used to highlight specific functions of herbs. Student questions will be answered when presented. Mini case studies will be utilized during the lecture to highlight various herb application.
Course 8: Extinguish Wind & Tremor, Detailed in-class Case Study
In the eighth class we will take an in-depth look at the most frequently used herbs within the Extinguish Wind & Tremor category. The review will include graphs comparing individual herb functions, thermal properties, entering meridians and best use for each herb. Discussion will include examples of specific applications of herbs within the category, and common Dui Yao combinations used frequently in classic herbal prescriptions. At the end of the class a detailed case study will be presented and afford the students an opportunity to participate in both the development of a treatment principle and the selection of herbs for the final custom prescription.
Each course is pending approval for 2 hours of distance learning credits by the NCCAOM, Provider #683 in AOM-BIO and pending approval for 2 hours of distance learning credits by the California Acupuncture Board provider #680 in Category 1.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Mark W. Frost, MSTCM, L.Ac. is chair of the Herbal Medicine Department at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California. Professor Frost teaches in both the Masters and Doctoral Programs, serves as a clinical supervisor in colleges Community Clinic, and has had a private practice in San Francisco for over 30 years. He is the author of numerous articles on Chinese herbal medicine and has presented at several TCM conferences since 2014.
